We worked with a local metalworker to create this beautiful, functional, stainless steel solar wax melter that is ideal for the backyard beekeeper. It easily fits your wax cappings, burr comb, or remaining bits of comb after crushing and straining honey. Solar melters work best with clean wax rather than blackened brood comb, which doesn't yield as much wax.
To use, simply place your wax in the upper tray and a container (such as an old condiment container or wax milk carton) below the mouth of the tray. Place a sheet of cheese cloth or swatch of nylon stockings over the opening of your container to catch any debris that may be in the wax. Adding a little water to your container will also help filter the wax. Place the clear Lexan cover in place, and prop up one end to create a slope. Watch as your wax melts right into your container!
"Tested here in Portland, Oregon on a 75 F degree day, the internal temperature in the melter exceeded 170 F." - Matt, Co-Owner of Bee Thinking
